Un estudio realizado por investigadores de la Universidad Johns Hopkins afirmó que este teléfono 3G permite mirar con calidad suficiente las imágenes obtenidas mediante la Tomografía Axial Computarizada y de esta forma identificar la enfermedad.
Estos datos fueron de los primeros en presentarse en la reunión anual de la Sociedad Radiológica de Norteamérica (RSNA), que se celebra estos días en Chicago.
Según el diario El Mundo, el estudio, que todavía no se ha publicado, se basa en el análisis por parte de cinco radiólogos de 25 tomografías pertenecientes a personas con dolor en la parte derecha del abdomen; 15 de ellas sufrían apendicitis.
Dirigidos por Asim Choudhri, de la Universidad Johns Hopkins (Baltimore, EEUU), los especialistas emplearon un iPhone, en el que previamente se había instalado el programa ’OsiriX Mobile’, para visionar las instantáneas de la citada prueba de imagen. Sus resultados se compararon con las obtenidas empleando un ordenador tradicional, provisto del sistema ’PACS’ de archivo de imágenes y comunicación.
Como destacan los autores del documento, los 15 pacientes fueron correctamente identificados con el teléfono y sólo se dio un caso de falso negativo. Sin embargo, el dispositivo no resultó tan útil para determinar el diámetro del apéndice.
